Why a Split Level Costs More Per Square Foot
People are often surprised that the stairs in a split level price differently from the bedrooms, and the reason is labour rather than material. A bedroom is one clean rectangle of carpet laid the long way, stretched once, done. A split level is a series of short flights joined by landings, and every one of those transitions is hand work: the tread wrapped over the nosing, the riser cut to fit, the landing pieced in so the pile direction still runs down the flight, the edges set into tack strip on three sides. Four half flights can carry more cutting and more finishing than the whole upstairs. It is worth knowing before the quote lands so the number makes sense.
