Stairs Cost More Than the Same Square Footage Flat

A curved flight like this one eats material and hours. Every tread gets cut on its own, the runner has to stay centered while the steps fan out, and each nose gets fastened separately. A straight flight of thirteen treads is easy to price. A winder or a curve is not, and no calculator can guess it. Send us your tread count and a photo, and we will price the stairs properly.

Ranges point you in a direction

A range is useful for one thing: deciding whether you are shopping for carpet or for hardwood. Carpet pricing usually rolls material, cushion and labor into a single figure, so a cheap number often hides a thin pad that flattens in two years. Repair and stretching get priced by the job, because a burn in the middle of a bedroom takes the same setup as a burn near the door. Hardwood, engineered wood, luxury vinyl plank, laminate and waterproof floors each sit in their own band, and the install method moves them further apart than the material does.

The bands here come from published local pricing and the kinds of jobs we see. They are not a promise that any specific product lands inside them. Read how carpet installation and replacement actually works before you fix a budget in your head.

Square footage is not the same as carpet ordered

Length times width is where you start, not where you finish. Broadloom arrives on 12 ft and 15 ft rolls, and your room either fits that width or it does not. Pile direction has to run the same way through connected rooms, which sometimes forces a less efficient cut. Closets, bay windows and stairs each take their own piece. Patterned carpet costs extra material because the repeat has to line up across every seam.

Hard floors waste material too, at the ends of runs and around angles, and most manufacturers want you to keep spare boxes for later repairs. Then there is the trim nobody budgets for: reducers, thresholds, stair nosings and quarter round.

The tape measure settles the price

A real quote lists the rooms, the material, the cushion or underlayment, removal and disposal, subfloor prep, transitions, furniture and the schedule. Product lead times can move both the price and the start date. If your carpet is only loose or damaged in one place, compare carpet stretching and carpet repair before you pay to replace the whole room.

Use the calculator to frame your questions, then bring those numbers to the walkthrough. A quote that shows its assumptions beats a low figure that hides the prep. Call +1 240 751 5542.

Carpet & Flooring Cost Questions

Why is the calculator not a quote?

It cannot see your rooms. It does not know your roll width, your stairs, your pattern repeat, or that there is a soft spot under the old vinyl.

Why does the carpet order beat my floor area?

Broadloom comes in 12 ft and 15 ft rolls. A 13 ft room off a 12 ft roll means a seam and offcuts. Pattern repeat and pile direction add more.

Can you price the prep before you rip up the old floor?

We price what we can see and mark the rest as an allowance. A rotted patch or three layers of old vinyl only turn up once we lift the floor.

Does every product fit one square-foot price?

No. Wool costs more than nylon. Solid hardwood costs more than LVP. Glue-down costs more labor than click-lock. The install method moves the price too.
