Ripples do more than trip you. Every wave flexes the backing as you walk over it, and the pile in that ridge wears out years before the rest of the room. Stretching pulls the field tight from wall to wall, so the carpet sits on the pad the way it was built to. Platforms, step-ups, and connected hallways get pulled in the same pass. The ripple you see in the middle of the den is rarely where the problem starts. Carpet loses tension in a direction, so we look at which way each wave runs and where it stops. If the same piece carries on down the hallway or into a closet, that carpet gets pulled too. Stretching half a piece just moves the slack.
We also ask when it started. A wave that appeared after a humid August is different from one that showed up two months after installation. The second one usually means it was kicked in and never power stretched.
Two things set the limit. The first is the backing. If the secondary backing has delaminated from the face, pulling on it will tear the carpet instead of tightening it. We check that before we quote, not after.
The second is the perimeter. Tack strip is a thin wood strip with angled pins, and those pins wear out, rust, or snap off. If the strip will not grip, the stretch has nothing to hold against, so we replace it. Doorways, transitions, and stair edges get the same look. Tears and open seams belong with carpet repair, and we can do both in one visit.
Stretching is worth it when the carpet still has pile left. If the traffic lanes are flattened, the backing is coming apart, or the color has gone, you are spending money to tighten something that is finished. Then carpet installation and replacement is the honest comparison, and we will run both numbers for you.

No. Delaminated backing, torn seams, or crumbling tack strip can rule it out. We can usually tell in a few minutes on site, and we will say so before you pay for anything.
Not completely. We work half a room at a time and shift furniture across. Empty the bookcases and china cabinets, unhook the electronics, and we handle the rest of the moving.
Not from a proper power stretch on sound backing. They can return if the backing is already failing or if the room floods. We tell you what we found under the carpet either way.
